What to do with this wild fabric? It seems to be felted wool/mohair with yarn somehow bonded to the surface. The yarns carry over off the edge of the selvage. I decided to make a coat with very simple lines to show off the fabric. I turned the pattern pieces sideways on the fabric to use the selvage edge as hems. I suppose I will have to trim the yarn at the sleeve edge just to be practical. I made view C of the pattern which has an assymetric closure. The coat is lined with shoulder pads. I lined up the edge of the felted fabric at the bottom edge of the pattern. I didn't take up any hem so the coat is at the full length of the pattern plus the extra yarn hanging off. I made a size 8 without my usual alterations for extra bust, tummy and hips because the coat is very loose fitting. Does it look like the pattern picture? If I were 8 inches taller I guess it does. It looks a lot narrower to me in the picture. The only change I made was to make an inseam buttonhole at the collar (thanks Kathryn for the idea) and to use only one button. This is an easy coat to sew. I know because I misplaced the instructions and put it together without them. When I finally found them I discovered I did a few things differently but it didn't matter. |
